beta firmwares, game engine files, middleware etc. There would've possibly been other unique software e.g. People spend years or decades collecting prototypes, and they're sometimes released out into the community, as with the recent PS2 dump of 700+ prototypes. There was a real loss of history, as dev kits often contain game prototypes which are extremely rare - think 2-3 copies left in the world outside of the publisher's vaults. The people complaining in that thread were likely running modded Xboxes which allow the loading of "backups". People were mostly mad because of game preservation, not emulation.

Maybe that's not such a big problem at all and the data worth saving is at the end of the rom in the data section, way after the code section. The problem with this is that the ed64 usb features are implemented via "software" in the menu, so even when you reset to it, the bootloader will overwrite e.g.
